The Butler Eagle won three Professional Keystone Press Awards for stories published in 2017, the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association announced this week.

Eagle News Editor Tom Harrison and staff writer Joe Genco won first place in the investigative reporting category for a series of stories in early 2017 starting with “Summit School water unsafe” that exposed the inaction of Butler School District administrators who had learned about high levels of lead in one of the district’s schools months earlier.

Eagle staff writers Jim Smith and Andrew Carr won second place in the news feature category for “Decades old Murder Mystery Unraveled,” which told the story of the investigation into the 1980 murder of Saxonburg Police Chief Gregory Adams by lifelong criminal Donald Webb.

Eagle staff writer Mike Kilroy won second place in the sports story category for “Osborn battling vertigo while coaching,” a story about Amber Osborn, the Slippery Rock High School girls basketball coach who has Meniere’s Disease and coaches despite the risk of vertigo episodes.

The Eagle competed against other multi-day publications from around the state with a circulation of between 15,000 and 29,999.

Winners will be honored at the Pennsylvania Press Conference banquet June 2 in Gettysburg.

The Keystone Press Awards recognize “journalism that consistently provides relevance, integrity and initiative in serving readers, and faithfully fulfills its First Amendment rights/responsibilities,” according to the NewsMedia Association’s website.
