Anglers in Butler County — and around the state — will soon be casting their lines in search of trout.

Statewide opening day of trout season is 8 a.m. April 14.

The minimum size trout anglers are permitted to keep is 7 inches and the creel limit is five fish per day through Labor Day when it goes down to three per day, according to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's website.

Fishermen must have a fishing license. A one-year adult fishing license costs $22.90 and multiyear, youth and senior citizen licenses are also available. A trout stamp is $9.90.

May 27 and July 4 are designated as “Fish-for-free Days” this year when any resident or nonresident can fish with no license required.
