Ice causes wreck overnight on 422
Paige Wissinger, 19, of Cabot, was seriously injured Wednesday night when she lost control of her car and slammed into the side of a bridge on Route 422 in Muddy Creek Township, emergency officials said.
A medical helicopter flew the woman, whose name was not released, to an unknown hospital following the accident shortly before 11 p.m. Rescuers described her injuries as “severe.”
State police are investigating but an accident report was not immediately available.
The woman was apparently eastbound and traveling over the Lake Arthur near Moraine State Park when her Honda Civic hit the bridge.
“The bridge was a sheet of ice,” said a firefighter with the Portersville Muddy Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department.
The initial 911 call reported a woman “laying on the roadway.” But the woman was not thrown from the car, Instead, emergency crews said, she managed to crawl out of the vehicle and onto the road.
She was conscious and alert when rescuers found her. Firefighters set up a landing zone at the Lake Arthur Estates mobile home park for the STAT MedEvac helicopter.
The car, officials said, sustained severe damage to the front end and right side.
