Couple, dogs flee fire in rental home

Firefighters look for hot spots in the roof after a fire damaged a rental home along Bonniebrook Road on Monday night.

JEFFERSON TWP — A couple and their three dogs fled to safety Monday night when a fire broke out in their one-story home on the 100-block of Bonniebrook Road.

The fire was reported around 6 p.m. and crews remained on the scene for more than two hours looking for hot spots in the roof using hand-tools and chain saws.

The house is owned by Kenneth Hespenheide, according to Butler County Real Estate records. The Ernst family have been renters there for more than 10 years, according to a neighbor.

No one was hurt in the fire, Saxonburg Fire Chief Chris Ballina confirmed at the scene.

A cause and damage estimates were unavailable Monday night.

The Saxonburg department was assisted at the scene by the Herman, Penn Township, Buffalo Township and Winfield Township fire departments.
