Driver held on $100,000 cash bond
The Butler man charged with injuring a state trooper while fleeing from a traffic stop in Butler is lodged in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 cash bond.
David Richard Coleman, 50, was arraigned Friday night on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault while driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding police, driving under the influence, endangering the welfare of a child, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest following the incident.
Police allege Coleman fled from Butler police at 4:39 p.m. Friday when officers tried to pull him over for a traffic violation at Hansen Avenue and Renaissance Drive.
City police called for assistance from state and Butler Township police, and Coleman continued to flee at slow to moderate speeds to Route 68, Duffy Road and Whitestown Road, police said.
He turned left from South Duffy Road to Whitestown Road and struck a marked state police patrol car head-on near the intersection.
The trooper, who has not been identified, was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. An update on his condition was not available Sunday.
Neither Coleman nor his passenger, a 13-year-old boy related to him, were injured, police said.
Coleman is also facing citations for numerous traffic violations, police said.
Friday’s incident occurred while Coleman was free on his own recognizance awaiting trial on driving under the influence and other charges Butler police filed following a Jan. 19 traffic stop.
He waived driving under the influence and other charges to court. A charge of careless driving was withdrawn.
