CRANBERRY TWP — Homicide charges were filed — and the ability to post bail was removed — Tuesday for a woman whose boyfriend police said clung to her SUV as she drove away Friday, before falling and receiving injuries resulting in his death.

Charges against Jessica A. Royall, 28, of Cranberry now include criminal homicide, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, recklessly endangering another person and several summary traffic offenses.

Ryan Minett, 27, of New Brighton died Saturday from injuries sustained in the accident. Due to the homicide charges, District Judge David Kovach denied bail during Royall’s video arraignment Tuesday.

The original criminal complaint states Royall drove her Buick Rendezvous a half-mile on Cross Creek Drive with Minett hanging from a luggage rack on the rear driver’s side of the vehicle. Several witnesses called 911 to report the incident, and Royall, who had returned to her home nearby on Boardwalk Drive, also called 911, according to court documents.

In her account to police, Royall said she and Minett were having an argument at her house and she got in her SUV to leave and pick up her children in North Huntingdon. She told police that Minett confronted her in the driveway and held on to the vehicle as she drove away, documents say.

She said Minett held on to the vehicle while she drove from Boardwalk Drive to Waterlilly Lane, to Theda-Dori Street to Cross Creek Drive. She claimed that she stopped at least four times to try to get him to stop hanging onto the vehicle, documents state.

Witnesses reported seeing Minett fall off the vehicle near the intersection with Little Pine Road, where he tumbled and hit a light pole. Investigators allege that he was dragged 2,629 feet.

Minett was pronounced dead Saturday at UPMC Passavant, where an autopsy was completed Sunday. The cause of death was determined to be blunt impact injuries to the head, torso and extremities.

The complaint filed Tuesday also indicates Royall was given a narcotics screening after the incident and reportedly tested positive for cocaine and opiates.

An April 6 preliminary hearing is scheduled.
