A 16-year-old boy is accused of making a general threat Friday at Freeport High School.

“He referenced the word 'murder' and said he was capable of doing it,” Buffalo Township Police Chief Tim Derringer said today of the boy.

Derringer noted police were preparing to charge the teen in Butler County juvenile court today with a misdemeanor count of terroristic threats.

The school district sent a letter home to parents Friday informing them of the alleged threat.

Police said the boy made the “verbal threat” that was heard by five other students.

“The threat was not specifically made toward anyone,” Derringer said.

The district letter, signed by Superintendent Ian Magness, Principal Michael Kleckner and Assistant Principal Patrick Scott, said other students reported to teachers that a fellow student had made “inappropriate and threatening” statements.

Police and district officials agreed that there was no immediate threat or potential for harm to students or staff.

Derringer said police interviewed the five students who reportedly heard the threat. They also interviewed the accused student, who was accompanied by his mother, at the police station.

Police declined to say what the boy told investigators.

The district said they removed the boy from the school Friday but his status as a student was not immediately known Monday.
