SRU falls to Scots on road

EDINBORO — Brandon Simmons broke Slippery Rock University’s single-season blocked shot record Wednesday night, but The Rock men dropped a 97-87 decision at Edinboro.

Simmons blocked two shots to bring his season total to 69, one more than the previous record of 68 set by Kevin Jones in 1990-91. Simmons also had eight points and six rebounds.

Edinboro (15-8, 12-7) sank 10 of 16 3-point shots along with 16 of 17 free throw attempts in the second half,

Micah Till had 28 points for SRU (19-7, 13-7), which fell a half game behind Gannon for second place in the PSAC West. Merdic Green added a career-high 26 points.

Edinboro 94, SRU (women) 61 — The Rock (12-13, 10-10) was handled by the 13th-ranked Fighting Scots, but clinched a PSAC Tournament berth with Mercyhurst’s 60-50 loss to California.

SRU is assured of finishing no worse than sixth place in the PSAC West. SRU is half a game out of fifth with two league games remaining.

Brooke Hinderliter paced SRU with 14 points, adding five rebounds. Madison Johnson had 11 points while Karns City graduate LeeAnn Gibson produced 10 points and five rebounds.

Michaela Barnes scored 25 points for Edinboro.

Both SRU teams host Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon at Morrow Field House.
