BUTLER TWP — The Butler School Board may consider shifting start times to allow high school students to sleep in.

Citing information from medical experts about sleep habits and health in young people, several districts in the region have been considering adjusting high school start times, including the Seneca Valley and North Allegheny school districts, superintendent Brian White said at Monday night’s meeting.

White said that the idea came up as school staff and volunteers continue to work on a new comprehensive plan. Administrators will be researching the idea and will present their findings to the board this spring.

White said that the biggest difficulty in adjusting school start times is figuring out logistics with transportation. A change will not be proposed for the 2018-19 school year, White said.

Under the current schedule, students at the senior high school report at 7:25 a.m. and have homeroom starting at 7:36 a.m. The earliest bus pickups are at 6:20 a.m., White said.
