Adams Township is the safest place in Pennsylvania this year, according to the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

Adams was the only municipality from Butler County to make the top 10.

The cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes and property crimes. The process to identify the safest cities involved reviewing FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics, population data and internal research, according to a release from the council.

With a population of 13,531, Adams had 0.37 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, according to the council's data from 2016. That is six times less than the state average. There were five violent crimes and 46 property crimes in 2016 in the township.

Also on the top 10 list from Western Pennsylvania are South Fayette Township and Franklin Park in Allegheny County and Penn Township in Westmoreland County.
