A Butler man is accused of an unusual attempted jailbreak.

City police say 37-year-old Brian J. Vlassich tried to break into — that's right, into — Butler County Prison.

His initial effort Feb. 2 failed. But hours later Vlassich apparently got his strange wish.

Police arrested him that night after a crime spree during which he allegedly attempted to carjack two people and tried to force his way onto a school bus before stealing a vehicle from the parking lot of a doctor's office.

Since then Vlassich has been in county jail on $100,000 bail. His bail increased by $5,000 on the latest charges.

Police said they were called about 1:35 a.m. Feb. 2 for a report of a man trying to break into the front doors at the jail on South Washington Street.

Prison officers told police that the man, later identified as Vlassich, first pounded on the glass doors before he grabbed a large bag of road salt and heaved it at the glass, according to court documents.

When that failed, police said, he returned with a large, standing metallic ashtray, which he also threw into the glass.

Police allege Vlassich was trying to break in before he walked away, leaving behind damage estimated at under $500.

He is charged with trespass, institutional vandalism and criminal mischief.

Vlassich was scheduled Monday afternoon to have a preliminary hearing on charges in connection with the pair of attempted carjackings. But that hearing was postponed at the request of his public defender.

Vlassich is accused of trying to take a woman's vehicle about 12:20 p.m. Feb. 2 as she waited for her daughter to get off the school bus at Liberty and West Wayne streets.

The woman recounted that she was sitting in her car when he attempted to open the driver's side door and asked to drive the vehicle, police said.

She told him “no,” but he walked around to her passenger side door and tried again to get inside the vehicle. The doors were locked and she called 911.

The bus eventually pulled up and stopped before the driver opened the doors.

Police said the woman immediately got out of her vehicle and closed the doors as Vlassich began approaching the bus.

He made it to the bus' doors but the woman shoved him away. Vlassich then took off running on South Washington Street.

Police believe Vlassich a short time later tried to open the door of another occupied vehicle, which was parked at West Wayne and South Washington streets.

The owner told police that he grabbed the handle from inside and shut the door of his pickup as Vlassich said, “Let me borrow your truck,” documents said.

Vlassich again took off running. He allegedly stole a sport utility vehicle that was parked at a doctor's office on the 200 block of South Washington Street.

Police suspect he found a set of keys in the SUV and drove away in it.

He subsequently ended up at the Walmart at the Butler Commons shopping plaza in Butler Township, where he called for an ambulance. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital — that's where police found him in the emergency department waiting room.

Investigators said he “confessed to everything.”

Police also found the stolen vehicle in a ditch near the shopping plaza.

He is charged with two counts of attempted robbery of a vehicle, theft of a vehicle, receiving stolen property and attempted unauthorized school bus entry.
