A Butler man was paroled in Butler County Court Thursday, after being charged in several drug cases and a domestic assault case.

Richard J. Dortman, 56, was sentenced to 60 months in the county Intermediate Punishment program, with 90 days in Butler County Prison, and was paroled from the jail with 90 days credit by Judge William Shaffer.

The parole will be followed by two years of probation.

He was also ordered to pay court costs, $2,500 in fines, complete 160 hours of community service, attend an Alcohol Highway Safety School and a Victim Impact Panel.

Dortman pleaded guilty Jan. 19 to misdemeanor simple assault, driving under the influence of controlled substances and two counts of possession of a controlled substance Jan. 16. He was also found guilty in a non-jury trial of a second count of DUI controlled substance.

The charges stem from four cases. Dortman was initially charged with three counts of DUI controlled substance after an incident May 11; misdemeanor simple assault after an incident May 24; two misdemeanor counts of DUI controlled substance after an incident June 6; and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and summary public drunkenness after an incident Nov. 1.

The remaining charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

He was found guilty of one of the DUI counts Jan. 19 by Shaffer in a non-jury trial, after Butler police charged him following a two-vehicle accident at West New Castle and West Cunningham streets.

Police were called after the driver of a vehicle drifted forward at a red light and rear-ended the car that Dortman was driving. While obtaining information from Dortman, an officer noticed he kept “failing in and out of consciousness,” according to court documents.

Police suspected he was impaired on drugs. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital after failing field sobriety tests.

Toxicology reports subsequently showed Dortman had codeine and morphine in his system, documents said.

Butler City police filed the charges in the May 24 incident after Dortman hit his girlfriend, Lili Szymecki, and threatened to kill her at the couple's home in the 300 block of West North Street.

Police said Dortman had become angry at the woman “for spending too much time in the bathroom,” according to court documents, before he started throwing things and grabbed her and threw her to the floor.

The woman suffered minor injuries, police said.

He pleaded guilty to the simple assault charge in that case.

City police filed charges in the June incident after Dortman was involved in a two-vehicle crash at New Castle and Cunningham streets and was found to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

He pleaded guilty to DUI in that case.

In the final case, in which he pleaded guilty to possession of heroin and marijuana, Butler police filed the charges in the November incident after a report of a man and woman being dragged from a home and placed on the sidewalk.

Dortman and Szymecki were found unconscious on the sidewalk in the 300 block of West Brady Street. Both appeared to have overdosed, police said.

Szymecki and Dortman were both revived with Narcan, and both were found to be wanted on warrants.

A search of Szymecki's purse turned up 50 stamp bags of suspected heroin, one bag of suspected cocaine, four drug-smoking pipes and two spoons, documents said. Dortman was found with four stamp bags and 10 empty bags of suspected heroin, a small baggie of suspected marijuana and a used syringe.

Both were charged. Szymecki awaits further court proceedings in her cases.
