SUMMIT TWP — A small fire in the Summit Academy gymnasium apparently started Tuesday morning when a staff member tried to thaw a frozen pipe with a blow torch, authorities said.

No injuries were reported.

Several fire department were called just before 9:30 a.m. for smoke coming from the building in back of the reform school on Herman Road in Summit Township.

“There was heavy smoke showing when we pulled in,” said a Saxonburg volunteer firefighter.

No students were in the gym and no one was injured, said Summit Academy spokesman Dick Roberts.

“The blow torch caught some insulation paper on fire,” he said. “It was minor and nothing really happened. There was no fire damage.”

Summit Academy is a school for court-adjudicated youth and young adults ages 14 to 19.
