Mary L. (Balint) McCandless
Mary L. (Balint) McCandless, 94, passed away Nov. 21.
She was born Nov. 3, 1923, in rural Slippery Rock.
She was a nurse who worked many years at the Bashline Hospital then later at the United Community Hospital, both in Grove City.
Mary was married for 53 years to her loving husband, Kenneth G. McCandless, who passed away in 1995. They were devoted to one another and had 10 wonderful retirement years together to travel around the United States and Canada, visiting family and friends along the way.
They both loved to travel and enjoyed many road trips here and in New Zealand. They instilled the belief that “travel is the best educator” in their children, Kenneth P. McCandless of Mount Vernon and Karen McCandless-Buck of Beaverton, Ore.
Mary and Ken moved to Oregon in 1993 when Ken became ill. Mary lived there near her daughter until 2011.
She was a member of the Aloha Christian Church in Oregon and St. John's United Methodist Church in Halston, Pa. She was also a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary at the VFW Post in Grove City.
Mary was an avid reader, still loved to go for rides in the countryside, was devoted to her family and her two kitties, Boots and Buffy.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and her six siblings, Edward, Margaret, Helen, Harry, Daniel and John Balint.
She is survived by her children, Kenneth and Karen; her grandson, Conrad Kenneth Buck of Portland, Ore.; and by four great-grandchildren, Benjamin David Buck, Jackson Charles McCandless Buck, Maxwell Samuel Buck and Harrison Michael Conrad Buck.
MCCANDLESS — Friends of Mary L. (Balint) McCandless, who died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, may call from noon until 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lasater Funeral Home, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio.
