BUTLER TWP — Downed wires in the area of Greenwood Drive left more than a thousand West Penn Power customers without power early Wednesday morning, though the problem appeared to have been largely fixed as of about 8:20 a.m.

According to the company’s website about 1,400 customers were affected by the outage Wednesday morning, as were stoplights along Evans City Road in Butler Township.

Township police Lieutenant Matthew Pearson said the department was not called out to direct traffic at the affected intersections Wednesday. He advised drivers on their morning commutes to use caution and common sense when they encounter a malfunctioning or nonfunctioning stop light.

“You’ve got to treat it as a four-way stop,” Pearson said.

West Penn Power said it expected power to be restored to all customers by 9 a.m. Wednesday.

According to logs kept by emergency dispatchers, the power outage was reported at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
