Overdose memorial set up in Butler
There are 84 crosses overlooking Main Street through the first week of January.
Each one represents more than a death. The purple that pops from each cross stands for overdose awareness.
“We have 84 crosses with 84 wreaths that have purple ribbons on them,” Georgette Fleeger, project manager for the 2017 Overdose Memorial, said.
Fleeger said the crosses took months to be where they are today, in the lot where the former Worsley's department store once stood.
The crosses were loaned for the project by St. Johns Church in Evans City. A crew of volunteers placed the crosses last Friday, but not under the guise of any particular group.
“We're just concerned citizens doing it,” Fleeger said. “Everybody knows somebody that's affected by this.”
Fleeger, who owns Second Chance Sober Living House in Butler, is no stranger to addiction. She is living her life in recovery and has encouraged others to do the same by giving them a home.
