Robert C. Milsom

Robert C. Milsom, 92, of Fox Chapel, originally of Butler, passed away Thursday.

He was the beloved husband of Joan Miller Milsom; and loving father of Christine (Thomas) Kobus, Robert C. III (Toni) and Mark C. (Vicki). He was the devoted grandfather of Christy and Diana Kobus, Samantha, Robert IV and Cody Milsom and Alexandra and the late Kiah Milsom.

He was the son of the late Robert C. and Margaret Leyland Milsom; and brother of Jenna Reilly, the late Margaret and the late Joyce (Fred, who survives) Kummer. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Bob Milsom was born on Dec. 15, 1924, in Butler, and graduated from Butler High School. In the fall of 1942 he entered Duquesne University with basketball and football scholarships, but his college days were interrupted by World War II.

Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army in January of 1943. He served as a 1st lieutenant in the 103rd infantry division in France and Germany and the Battle of the Bulge. At war's end, he was assigned to the 787 Military Policy Battalion.

After his discharge, he entered John Carroll University, graduating in 1948. He began his career at Peoples First National Bank and Trust (predecessor to PNC Bank). During his career, he advanced through the Commercial Banking Division to become chairman and CEO of Pittsburgh National Bank (predecessors to PNC Financial Services and PNC Bank). In 1983, he was also elected vice chairman of PNC Bank Corp. He was a member of the board of directors of PNC Bank, N.A. and PNC Equity Management.

Bob retired at year-end 1989. During his tenure at PNC Bank, Bob also served on the boards of VISA USA, and VISA International. He was a delegate to the International Monetary Conference and served on the board of H.H. Robertson Co.

Bob was a great champion for the Western Pennsylvania region. He was an advocate of civic involvement and was extremely active in the Pittsburgh community. He was a member of the board of directors of the Regional Industrial Development Corp. He served as chairman of the board of the Executive Service Corps, Foxwall Emergency Medical Service and The Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. Additionally, he was a member of the board of Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and John Carroll University.

Throughout his career, Bob served on many other community boards, including the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, the United Way of Allegheny County, the Pittsburgh Regional Planning Association and the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Duquesne Club, Fox Chapel Golf Club and Rolling Rock Country Club.

Bob was an avid reader, loved golfing and enjoyed all sports. He was a devoted family man, a true and trusted friend to many and a great lover of the city of Pittsburgh.

MILSOM — There will be no visitation for Robert C. Milsom, who died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017.Service and interment will be private.
