Butler could reopen Summit Township Elementary school

Summit Township Elementary School.

After two water quality tests at the closed Summit Elementary School in November showed the water is safe to drink, the Butler School Board will consider Monday reopening the school after the Christmas break.

Superintendent Brian White Jr. sent parents a letter Friday explaining the proposed reopening and necessary changes to the school calendar.

“We're now at the point where we can work on transition back into the school,” White said Friday, cautioning that the board must approve the reopening plan Monday.

“I anticipate board approval,” Nina Teff, school board president, said Friday.

She said Monday's meeting will be the first for the newly elected board members and procedures for continued water testing will be discussed, but she believes the reopening plan will receive majority approval.

The schedule adjustments are needed to give Summit teachers enough time to pack their class materials in Broad Street Elementary School in Butler, where they and their students have been since last year when high levels of lead and copper were found in the water at Summit, and unpack in their classrooms in Summit.

“We really think we need three days to move. Teachers need three days to move and unpack,” White said. 'The teachers have been tremendous. Asking teachers to move a classroom is a lot of work.”

The Christmas break is from Dec. 25 through Jan. 1.
