A Butler resident Wednesday night possibly scared off a burglar that had broken into his home on Cecelia Street, authorities said.

The unknown suspect in the apparent hasty getaway left behind a garbage bag filled with belongings rounded up in the house. Among the would-be loot were Girl Scout cookies and peanut butter, Butler police said.

Police are investigating the break-in but there are no suspects, Deputy Chief David Adam said Thursday.

The 37-year-old victim notified authorities about 7:35 p.m. after returning home to find the back door damaged. He also heard a noise coming from the house.

“He thought he heard someone going out the front door,” Adam said.

The resident later went inside and found the house had been rummaged through, according to police. He also saw the black garbage bag stuffed with goodies and other items from the home.

In the bag, Adam said, was an Xbox video game system and a controller, a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey, a pair of flip-flops, a bottle of alcohol, a jar of peanut butter and two boxes of Girl Scout cookies.

The bag that was left behind, Adam said, “would seem to indicate that (the resident) surprised the (burglar).”

Police believe the suspect got into the house through the back door, which sustained damage to its frame and handle.

Adam said police are checking to see if the crime was picked up by video surveillance cameras at any neighboring homes.

Police, meanwhile, continue to investigate several other home burglaries in November. It was not immediately known, Adam said, if any of the break-ins are connected.

The other burglaries and one attempted break-in occurred:

Nov. 26 on the 400 block of North Chestnut Street. The occupant was home when he heard someone trying to get into the front and side doors. The motion lights were activated and the suspect fled.

Between Nov. 22 and 25 on the 200 block of Roosevelt Boulevard. A 55-inch television and two DVD players were stolen. Police found no sign of forced entry.

Nov. 20 on the 300 block of North Elm Street. An Xbox video game system, controller and video game, valued at a combined $600, were stolen. A door was forced open to get inside.

Nov. 18 on the 300 block of West Diamond Street. A 50-inch television was stollen. There was no sign of forced entry.

Nov. 15 on the 300 block of South Monroe Street. A Smith & Wesson pistol was taken. It appeared the burglar got inside using a pry bar to force open the back door.

Nov. 13 on Wren Street. A 48-inch television was stolen. The suspect got inside after breaking the front door glass and reaching in far enough to unlock the door.

Nov. 8 on the 400 block of First Street. A computer, weed-eater and hedge trimmer were taken. There was no sign of forced entry.

Nov. 8 on Knox Avenue. Stolen was a 43-inch television, gold ring and four watches, Fuji mountain bike, 10 gold dollar coins, an iPhone 6 and a lawn mower. Entry was made through a bedroom window.
