Alton R. Opitz

Alton R. Opitz, 81, of Butler passed away Saturday at the VNA Inpatient Hospice.

He was born Feb. 6, 1936, in Harrisville, Pa., the son of the late Harold R. Opitz and the late Florence M. Grossman Opitz.

Alton graduated from Harrisville High School in 1953 and Grove City College with a degree in electrical engineering. He worked as an electrical engineer for the magnetics division of Spang and Company for 41 years before retiring in 1998. During that time, Alton worked in research and development, developing a number of the company's products and processes and received a patent for one of these products. He later served in a number of management and sales positions in East Butler and other sales positions in California and Florida.

Alton was a member of the Community Alliance Church. He moved to Florida in 1985, living in West Palm Beach and then spent 15 years in Naples. He was active at the First Baptist Church in Naples at that time. Alton enjoyed working for Habitat for Humanity while in Naples, handyman work and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn L. Opitz, whom he married Sept. 6, 1957; one daughter, Cheryl L. Lashway and her husband, Marc, of Bellingham, Wash.; one son, Brian R. Opitz and his wife, Kayce, of West Sunbury; four grandchildren, Bradley Opitz, Brooke Opitz, Justin Wehrli and Jensen Wehrli; and one brother, H. Bruce Opitz and his wife, Nancy, of Grove City.

OPITZ — There will be no public visitation for Alton R. Opitz, who died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017.Private burial took place at the Butler County Memorial Park.Friends will be received from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Community Alliance Church, 800 Mercer Road, Butler.A memorial service will immediately follow at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Community Alliance Church with the Rev. Dr. Dennis Krajacic officiating.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Community Alliance Church, 800 Mercer Road, Butler, PA 16001.Arrangements are being handled by Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E.
