Paul 'Red' Uram

Paul 'Red' Uram

Paul “Red” Uram, 91, passed away peacefully in his hometown of Butler on Friday.

Paul was born May 14, 1926, in Lyndora, to Wallace and Eva (Sychak) Uram.

He graduated from Butler High School, then went on to Slippery Rock University for his undergraduate degree. He then attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he received a master's degree in physical education.

Paul met Helen Herman and they married in 1949.

Paul had a long career in physical education and coaching. He was a gymnast, competed on the track team and played football growing up, which proved to be his calling in life.

His success in coaching football eventually led him to coaching in the NFL for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1973 until 1981. He was always recognized by former students and athletes. Paul was very proud of everyone he coached and loved sharing stories. His teaching brought him to Millvale High School in the early 1950s and then to Lyndora Elementary School and finally to Butler Junior and Senior High Schools.

A natural extension of his teaching was his pursuit of coaching. Paul coached at Millvale High School, football and gymnastics; Butler High School, football, track and gymnastics; and then with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Paul is a proud member of the U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame (1974), Slippery Rock University Hall of Fame (1986), Slippery Rock All-Time Football Team (1965), Butler County Sports Hall of Fame (1969), and the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (1972).

Paul was an author of books on the topic of human movement, flexibility and stretching.

He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his friends and family.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Helen; his son, Ronald Uram and his wife, Amy; his grandchildren, Michael Uram and his wife, Michelle, Katherine Caracciolo and her husband, Joel, and David Uram and his wife, Jessica; and his great-grandchildren, Luca Uram, Connor Caracciolo and Willabea Uram.
