Two incumbents and a challenger are vying for two seats on the Butler Township board of commissioners in the election Tuesday.

Incumbent Sam Zurzolo, who appears on both Republican and Democratic ballots, incumbent Charles Nedz, a Republican, and challenger Fred Vero, a Democrat, are running for two seats with four year terms in office.

Zurzolo, who is seeking his fourth consecutive term, served 30 years in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserves and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, National Service Medal with Star, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with three stars.

Following his military service, he worked as a maintenance supervisor for Pittsburgh-based real estate and construction company Oxford Development.

Zurzolo was the leading vote-getter in the Republican primary and won a spot on the Democratic ticket by receiving 45 write-in votes.

He is the vice president of the commissioners and is in charge of the police department, recycling and serves as the liaison to the Butler Area Sewer Authority.

Nedz, an attorney for 25 years who works in the Butler County Public Defender’s office, is running for his second term. He is in charge of zoning and code enforcement, the multi-municipal comprehensive plan and contract negotiations.

Vero, who serves on the township planning commission, launched a successful write-in campaign to win a Democratic Party nomination in the primary.

He is a former mayor of Butler, city councilman and city controller, and was employed as chief of staff for state Reps. Joe Steighner and Guy Travaglio for a combined 18 years.

“If I’m lucky enough to be elected, it will be 40 years from when I was elected mayor,” Vero said. “I think the township is in pretty good hands so far. I think with my governmental background I can be an asset to the township and put my experience to work. I’m retired so I have some extra time on my hands.”
