CHERRY VALLEY — A typographical error in reporting water testing results caused concern among some parents in the Moniteau School District.

However, district administrators assure students and parents that the water at the high school is safe.

With the approval of the state Department of Environmental Protection, the district issued an update Monday to announce renovations to the existing water filtration system at the high school — and to provide the results of recent water testing.

Testing in 2017 showed no volatile organic components, Coliform bacteria or other acute health risks. Testing in August for lead and copper were also well within the standards, according to the update.

According to the update, samples collected in August for disinfectant by products all measured below the state standard and levels in samples collected during the past year have decreased.

However, the running average for haloacetic acids, a disinfectant byproduct, at one sample location at the high school was above the standard.

The running average is based on all measurements for the previous 12 months.

Jeff Campbell, director of buildings and grounds for the district, said on Thursday there was a typographical error in the district's update. He said the correct running average for haloacetic acids in August was 0.061 milligrams per liter. The state standard is 0.060 milligrams per liter. The running average given in the update was incorrect — and much higher than the testing results.

According to information provided by the DEP for the update, no alternative source of water is necessary and no emergency exists.

“It was one location. It wasn't the entire school,” Campbell said. “It's a running average. The tests in August were below the Pennsylvania Division of Drinking Water Management maximum contaminant levels.”

Campbell said the district is scheduled to test the water again on Wednesday, and he expects the results to bring the district's running average to within state guidelines.

The update released on Monday and the correction are on the district's website.

“The main purpose of sending this home was advising them that we are updating the water system,” Campbell said.

He said in October that the current equipment is no longer working at full capacity and necessary parts to repair the aging water treatment system are not available.

A new water treatment system for the high school was approved Oct. 9 by the Moniteau School Board. Book and Proch Well Drilling Inc. of New Castle will install the new system by the end of December.
