SRU not taking winless Griffins lightly

Seton Hill has history of Rock upsets

SLIPPERY ROCK — Seton Hill has not won a game all season.

The Griffins won a surprising one against Slippery Rock the last time SRU visited Offut Field. Seton Hill hung a 41-38 upset defeat on The Rock, the latter's lone regular season loss in 2015.

“We ran the table after that and recovered,” SRU coach Shawn Lutz recalled. “We don't have that luxury this time.

“Not many teams at this time of year know that if they win their final two games, they stand a good chance of going to the Division II playoffs. We're one of those teams. But we can't afford a stumble.”

SRU (7-2, 4-2) concludes its PSAC West schedule against the Griffins (0-9, 0-6) at noon Saturday at Offut Field.

The game will feature two of the top quarterbacks in Division II this season. SRU's Tanner Garry has thrown for a Division II-leading 2,889 yards this season, despite throwing for only 57 in last week's 24-9 win over Clarion.

Seton Hill's Christian Strong has thrown for 2,552 yards and 17 TDs, though he has been victimized by 20 interceptions.

“When he's right, Christian is as good as any (D-II) quarterback in the country,” Griffins coach Isaac Collins said. “Not all of those interceptions have been his fault.

“We've had balls bounce off receivers' hands and into defenders. That's happened a few times.”

Strong has put up big numbers despite not having his top target, Ardell Brown, this year. Brown was hurt early in the season and received a medical red-shirt.

Michael Elardo leads the Griffins with 52 catches for 883 yards and six scores. Jarvis McClam, a former quarterback, leads Seton Hill with 570 yards rushing. He's also caught 26 passes for 267 yards.

“I don't care what their record is,” Lutz said. “That program is fully funded and they've got athletes. They haven't figured it out on defense yet, but they've got plenty of playmakers.

“Seton Hill can put up points. We need to jump out on them, early, but that's something we haven't done all year.”

The Rock averages 36.8 points per game this season. Seton Hill averages a respectable 23.5, but is allowing a whopping 52 points per contest.

Clarion (33) and Mercyhurst (35) are the only teams not to score more than 42 points against the Griffins.

Edinboro scored 49 points in the second half last week in its 69-20 win over Seton Hill.

“We lost 21 seniors a year ago,” Collins said. “We've got no seniors starting on defense. We're playing freshmen and sophomores. We haven't been getting stops and we haven't been getting turnovers. We haven't been getting off the field on third down.

“That's a rough combination.”

The Griffins have registered only four quarterback sacks as a team this year. They have only four takeaways all season.

SRU's Marcus Martin has 14 sacks and 24.5 tackles for loss by himelf. Tavarus Sample, a converted receiver, leads The Rock defense with 76 tackles.

“We can't use the weather as an excuse last week,” Lutz said. “Our entire offense just had a bad game. I'm confident we'll bounce back from that with a big effort.

“We're still looking for that game where we hit on all cylinders. Maybe this will be it.”

SRU leads the series between the teams 6-2, including a 33-21 win last year. Seton Hill has had only one winning season in its history (2008).
