ZELIENOPLE — Billing changes that are part of the borough’s new water rate structure go into effect Wednesday.

The new structure offers a wider range of cost options based primarily on how much water a customer uses. The old structure included a minimum charge that only increased after 2,000 gallons were used.

The current system includes a meter charge but replaces the minimum charge with a consumption rate of $9.30 per 1,000 gallons.

In a sample bill supplied by township manager Don Pepe, an average home with a less than two-inch meter would be charged 12.80 per month for the meter and the rest would be based on the consumption rate.

In the old system, the same home would pay $31.20 a month unless it used more than 2,000 gallons.

Charges will depend on the type of meter a household uses, with bigger meters resulting in bigger charges to the customer.
