Astros win in 11 wild innings

HOUSTON — Game 5 of the World Series proved to be a case of Can You Top This?

Alex Bregman finally topped them all.

After more than 400 pitches and five hours of baseball Sunday night, Bregman delivered a two-out RBI single in the 11th inning Sunday night, giving the Houston Astros a 13-12 win over the Dodgers.

Houston took a 3-2 lead in the Series. Game 6 is Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

The teams traded big hits all night at Minute Maid Park.

Houston reliever Chris Devenski came on with two outs in the eighth inning and induced Andre Ethier to ground out to first base with the tying runs in scoring position. That enabled the Astros to hold on to an 11-9 lead.

It reached 12-9 on a Brian McCann home run in the eighth, only to see the Dodgers tie the game with a three-run ninth. Down to his final; strike, Chris Taylor delivered a two-out, game-tying single to center. Yasiel Puig hit a two-run homer before that.

Before that, it was back and forth.

The Astros hit five home runs and their 14 homers in the Series thus far tied the record set by the 2002 Giants. The teams have combined for a Series record 22 homers.

After Yuli Gurriel belted a three-run homer off Dodger ace Clayton Kershaw to tie the game in the fourth inning, Cody Bellinger answered for Los Angeles with a three-run blast of his own in the fifth.

The latter blow gave the Dodgers a 7-4 lead, but that proved to be short-lived against the Astros.

Houston put two runners on with two outs in the fifth, prompting Dodger manager Dave Roberts to remove starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw in favor of Kenta Maeda.

But Jose Altuve greeted Maeda with a three-run homer of his own to knot the game at seven.

Bellinger’s RBI triple gave L.A. a brief 8-7 lead in the seventh. But a George Springer homer in the bottom of the frame knotted the game again.

Altuve followed with a run-scoring double and Carlos Correa drilled a two-run homer to give the Astros an 11-8 lead.

The Dodgers built an early 4-0 lead.
