George R. Murphy
George R. Murphy, 81, of Butler passed away Sunday at the Butler Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 25, 1936, in Butler to the late James Wills Murphy and Jeanne Gallagher Murphy.
George was Methodist by faith. He attended Butler High School and Slippery Rock Teacher's College where he received a B.S. in Education in 1959.
George went on to the University of New Mexico, earning a Masters of Math Science in 1964. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during peacetime, serving in Texas at Lackland Air Force Base. A highly respected teacher, George taught mathematics at Pine-Richland for 40 years, as well as evening classes at Butler County Community College.
Upon the birth of his first granddaughter, he decided to retire in 1996 to spend more time with his family. George was a member of the Mathematical Association of America. He dedicated his entire life to his family and teaching.
George is survived by his wife, Sue Greenawalt Murphy who he married on Nov. 23, 1960; one daughter, Erin C. Murphy Fugh and her husband, Mark, of Butler; two granddaughters, Abigail Murphy Fugh and Maggie Lyn Murphy Fugh of Butler; and several cousins.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents.
MURPHY — Friends of George R. Murphy, who died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E.
