Bednar gets fall league invite
ADAMS TWP — It certainly won't be David Bednar's last stop in professional baseball, but it is a very important one.
The 2013 Mars High School graduate, currently a relief pitcher in the San Diego Padres' farm system, has been invited to play in the prestigious Arizona Fall League.
Most players who play in the league come from the Double-A and Triple-A level, but Bednar attracted attention as a Single-A player.
The season runs Oct. 10 until Nov. 18.
“I'm really excited for the opportunity,” said Bednar. “I just want to compete to the best of my ability and see if I have what it takes against some of the better hitters in the minor leagues.”
Bednar was a starting pitcher in high school and at Lafayette College (2014-16) before being taken by the Padres in the 35th round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft in 2016.
Bednar began this past summer playing for Fort Wayne (Ind.) and posted impressive numbers — 1-1 with a 1.87 ERA, 50 strikeouts and 11 walks in 24 appearances. He was promoted to Lake Elsinore (Calif., Class A-Advanced), where he tallied a 3.58 ERA in 21 games. That team's season wrapped up in early September.
