Mary Jane Carrara McGowan of Slippery Rock passed away Wednesday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

She was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Brady Township and was the daughter of Joseph Serafino Carrara and Jane Fusco Carrara. She grew up in Branchton, Pa.

Mary Jane married Robert Frank McGowan June 20, 1948, and he preceded her in death May 16, 2014.

Mary Jane graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1945 and later Slippery Rock State Teachers College. She taught high school English in Harlansburg and later at Eastbrook. She did substitute teaching in Slippery Rock. Previously, she had been active in Butler Little Theatre and New Castle Playhouse.

Mary Jane is survived by her niece, Paula Book Good and her husband, Terry, of Portersville; two nephews, Mitchell Book and his wife, Brenda, of Winona Lake, Ind., and Martin Book and his wife, Ruth, of Springfield, Ohio; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Dorothy Book and Victoria August.

MCGOWAN — Funeral services for Mary Jane Carrara McGowan, who died Wednesday, July 12, 2017, were private at Smith Funeral Home in Slippery Rock. Interment was at Slippery Rock Cemetery.
