BUTLER TWP — Township police say it’s unlikely that any charges will be filed after a 5-year-old child fell out a second-story window on Center Avenue and had to be taken by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh-area hospital.

Police Chief John Hays said Thursday morning that the department was still investigating the incident, which occurred at about 6 p.m. Wednesday, but that officers had noted that the second-floor apartment where the child’s family lives appeared to be well-maintained and that windows and doors in the home had child safety features on them.

That didn’t prevent the child, which Hays said has Down syndrome, from somehow getting a second-story window open and falling out.

Hays said the child was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital and subsequently taken by medical helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. No information was immediately available Wednesday night or Thursday morning about the child’s condition. Hays said that emergency responders told police that the child was bleeding from the nose at the scene.

Residents at the home on Center Avenue, which is a three-story house that contains three separate apartments, either said they had not seen what happened Wednesday evening or asked a reporter to leave the property.
