Freeport hammers Yough in Week Zero

Freeport quarterback Austin Romanchak, No. 7, cuts past Yough's Dustin Shoaf for a touchdown on Friday.

FREEPORT — It was only Week Zero, but Freeport was definitely conditioned to win Friday night.

The Yellowjackets broke open a close game at the half by outscoring visiting Yough 29-0 over the final two quarters, cruising to a 43-6 non-section football victory.

“We were up against a big, powerful line, but I felt like our conditioning would take over in the second half,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said.

It did — and quarterback Austin Romanchak proved to be the beneficiary.

Romanchak had 12 carries for 205 yards and four touchdowns on the night. His 63-yard scamper off a fake pitch on an option play was the game's first score. Romanchak added a 30-yard scoring run in the second quarter, then touchdown jaunts of 25 and 58 yards in the final quarter.

In between his last two touchdowns, he found the end zone on a 45-yard interception return.

“My coaches prepped me for making those reads,” Romanchak said. “We go over a lot of film.”

Romanchak finished the night with 319 all-purpose yards.

Freeport does not play next week, but the Yellowjackets travel to Deer Lakes on Sept. 8.
