In Brief
PITTSBURGH — The chief nurse executive at Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has been elected to the American Hospital Associate board of trustees,
Claire Zangerle, who joined AHN in 2016, was elected to a three-year term on the board beginning Jan. 1. The American Hospital Association is a nonprofit organization that includes nearly 5,000 hospitals, health care systems, networks and other health care providers, as well as 43,000 individual members.
The AHA’s board of trustees is the organization’s highest policy-making board, and ultimately directs its governance, finances and management direction. Zangerle is one of eight incoming members of the board.
At AHN, Zangerle leads an executive nursing team that includes the chief nursing officers at each of the network’s affiliated hospitals. She oversees the nursing practice and more than 3,000 nurses, with a focus on care and positive patient experiences.

NEW YORK — Abercrombie & Fitch reported a narrower second-quarter loss Thursday than analysts had expected, powered by its surf-inspired Hollister brand. Total revenue also topped Wall Street’s estimates.
The report was an encouraging sign of where the company stood as it headed into the critical stretch of the back-to-school shopping season, and comes more than a month after A&F announced that it had terminated talks with potential buyers.
Like many teen retailers, A&F has struggled to bring back shoppers since the Great Recession. Younger shoppers are spending more online and less at malls, and they have been gravitating more toward fast fashion retailers like H&M. In the last year or so, Aeropostale, American Apparel and Wet Seal have filed for bankruptcy.
Abercrombie has tried to tweak its brand to attract new shoppers. It dumped sexy ads and updated its fashions. It’s closed almost 400 stores since 2010 and plans to close 60 this year.
