Rock athletics adding 7 to HOF
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University Athletic Hall of Fame will add seven new members at its annual induction banquet Sept. 9.
Joining the Hall will be women’s basketball players Jackie Altenweg and Melissa McKavish Dabkowski, men’s soccer player Gerald Hendershot and Jack Jarvie, women’s soccer player Meghan McGrath Buzzio, women’s soccer coach Noreen Herlihy and football player Brian Polk.
The 34th induction ceremony will take place prior to The Rock’s home football game against West Chester. The event will be hosted by the Robert M. Smith Student Center ballroom with social hour at 1:30 p.m., dinner and induction ceremony at 2:30 p.m.
The induction class will also be recognized at halftime of the 6 p.m. football game at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Tickets for the dinner and ceremony are $40 if purchased before Sept. 1, $50 if purchased after that date.
Members of the SRU men’s golf team from 1970-72 will be celebrated with the Special Recognition Award.
That golf team won two PSAC titles, three NAIA district titles and participated in five national tournaments. The team was coached by the late Bob Raymond, who joined the SRU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.
Golfers on those teams included Bob Allshouse, Dick Basciano, Harry Beil, Jim Cieslak, John DiMuccio, Michael Ihlenfeld, Bill Miller, Steve Shefchek, Vince Zachetti and Bob Morris.
Here is a look at this year’s seven individual inductees:
Jackie Altenweg
A 2002 SRU graduate, she was an All-American as a senior, a three-time team captain and Rock record holder in career 3-point shooting percentage.
SRU totaled 67 wins in her four-year career.
Gerald Hendershot
A 1981 SRU graduate, he ranks third in career goals and fifth in career scoring in Rock men’s soccer history. He also served 25 years in the U.S. Army, earning seven Army Commendation Medals and eight Good Conduct medals.
The Rock was 40-16-3 during his four years on the team.
Noreen Herlihy
She was head women’s soccer coach for 20 years at SRU and guided one of the most consistent programs in the country. Her teams had 18 straight years of 10 wins or more.
Her overall record at The Rock was 250-113-30 for a .674 winning percentage. The 250 wins are most by a coach in PSAC women’s soccer history.
Jack Jarvie
A 1959 SRU graduate, he was a two-time All-American and two-time team captain in men’s soccer. He ranks 10th in school history in goals and 11th in points.
He scored 30 goals and 12 assists over 32 games prior to graduating from The Rock.
Meghan McGrath Buzzio
A 2007 SRU graduate, she was a two-time All-American and four-time all-region selection in women’s soccer. She was also 2007 PSAC Athlete of the Year.
SRU was 57-20-7 with two PSAC titles and three NCAA Tournament berths while Buzzio played.
Melissa McKavish Dabkowski
A 2003 SRU graduate, she is The Rock’s all-time leader in women’s basketball games played and ranks second in school history in steals, seventh in assists and eighth in points.
She was a freshman on the SRU team that went 23-7 and reached the NCAA Elite Eight.
Brian Polk
A 2001 SRU graduate, he was a two-time All-American and was 1998 PSAC Defensive Player of the Year in football. He is The Rock’s all-time leader in interceptions and interceptions returned for touchdowns.
During his four-year career, SRU won 40 games, three PSAC championships and went to the NCAA Division II playoffs three times.
