Dodger ace put on DL
LOS ANGELES — Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is headed to the disabled list after his latest back injury.
The All-Star left his start against the Atlanta Braves after two innings on Sunday because of right low back tightness.
Manager Dave Roberts said Kershaw felt something on his last warm-up pitch going into the second inning.
“Just felt a little something in my back that wasn’t normal,” a subdued Kershaw said.
After a couple of practice pitches in front of a team trainer, Kershaw resumed facing Tyler Flowers with two outs and walked him. He struck out Matt Adams to end the inning and headed into the clubhouse.
“He couldn’t get extended. The aggression wasn’t there,” catcher Austin Barnes said. “I saw it for a couple pitches and it was kind of messed up.”
From behind the plate, Barnes could tell something wasn’t right.
“It looked like something was going on in his head, it looked like something in his eyes,” Barnes said. “I think it was on his mind for sure. He didn’t want to hurt more.”
Kershaw struck out two and walked one on 21 pitches.
The left-hander was expected to see a doctor and undergo tests later Sunday.
“It is a DL situation,” Roberts said. “It will take 10 days regardless.”
Kershaw is 15-2 with a 2.04 ERA. The NL West-leading Dodgers are 19-2 when he starts this season, including winning their last 15 games.
STRASBURG LEAVES
PHOENIX — Stephen Strasburg left after struggling with his control in the second inning, and the Washington Nationals wrapped up a successful nine-game trip with a 6-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
There was no word from the Nationals during the game explaining the standout right-hander’s departure.
Strasburg, 10-3 with a 3.31 ERA entering the game, uncharacteristically walked the No. 8 and No. 9 batters in the second inning before departing with a 5-0 lead. He threw 51 pitches, 29 strikes.
SOX CALL UP DEVERS
ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Boston Red Sox are calling up third base prospect Rafael Devers after failing to find a better solution on the trade market.
Devers will join the Red Sox in Seattle today and make his major league debut against the Mariners on Tuesday, Boston president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said after a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Devers hit .368 with two home runs and four RBIs in 10 games with Triple-A Pawtucket after batting .300 with 18 homers in 77 games at Double-A Portland.
The Red Sox have gotten little production from third this season. They had hoped for a bounce back from Pablo Sandoval, but they cut bait with Kung Fu Panda by releasing him last week. Dombrowski said Boston has explored a trade to upgrade the position, and rumors connected the team to slugger Todd Frazier before the Yankees acquired him from the Chicago White Sox last week.
