The state Department of Health said Wednesday it will provide free tetanus shots to anyone who came into contact with flood debris last week in the city.

Acting Secretary of Health and Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine, in a news release, recommended that everyone who was near the flooded area check with their doctor to make sure that their tetanus immunization is current.

“Since the bacteria that causes tetanus can be found on contaminated objects in flood debris and enter the skin through cuts or puncture wounds, it’s always best to err on the side of caution,” Levine said.

Anyone who is uninsured can call the Butler State Health Center at 724-287-1769 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to set up an appointment for a free immunization.

Tetanus, sometimes called “lockjaw,” can cause symptoms such as fever, jaw cramping, muscle spasms and seizures. It is usually contracted through a wound.
