SUMMIT TWP — Where's Bill Murray when you need him?

Similar to Murray's role as Carl in the movie “Caddyshack,” who waged war on a gopher tearing up a golf course, a man's battle with a groundhog caused some damage Wednesday afternoon.

Chief Rob McLafferty of the Herman Volunteer Fire Company said the man, whose name was unavailable, threw a pest-control smoke bomb down a hole trying to shoo a groundhog off his property in the 400 block of Bonniebrook Road.

He said the tactic ignited wood and brush piles, spreading across a roughly 30-foot swath.

“It was endangering a shed,” he said.

He said the man was using a garden hose in an attempt to douse the flames.

“He was trying to fight it,” McLafferty said.

Upon seeing the fire, farmers stopped to help, using buckets of water.

McLafferty said his department used a total of 925 gallons of water to extinguish the fire.

The 911 call came in at 2:30 p.m. McLafferty and one of his firefighters already were at the nearby fire station off Herman Road putting away a trailer.

Crews cleared the scene at 4:41 p.m.

McLafferty cautioned residents using such gadgets.

“It serves as a reminder for anyone using a device that puts out heat,” he said.

The groundhog's condition was unavailable.
