Harry James Meier

Harry was born on Sept. 11, 1929, in Harrisville to Emil Ernest Meier and Annie Catherine Weitzel Meier. He graduated from Harrisville High School in 1947.

Harry declined an offer of a military deferment, which he was entitled to, so that he might serve like his brothers had previously done in World War II. Therefore, as a U.S. Army veteran, Harry served in the Korean conflict and was decorated for his bravery, receiving a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and a Silver Star. He was a member of Stanley Snyder VFW Post 7465 in Springfield Township and the Harrisville American Legion Post 852.

He retired after 42 years' service in New Castle at Flowline, where he ran a printing press making stainless steel fittings for various components utilized in the construction of atomic subs and other military hardware. In his 42-year career he only missed three days of work.

He became a member of the Harrisville Lions Club in February 1973 and was a member of the Honor Roll of Lions and a Lions Pennsylvania Foundation Fellow.

He had an avid interest in hunting and fishing and was a regular participant in the Tuesday night bowling league at the Shenango Lanes. He was a member of the Boyers Sportsmen's Club. He was a former member of the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church, Slippery Rock Sportsmen's Club, Slippery Rock Rifle Club and the RETREADS Motorcycle Club of Western PA.

Survivors include two sons, Harry J. Meier Jr. and his wife, Mary, and Daniel E. Meier and his wife, Lisa, all of Harrisville; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Pat, Fred, Scotty, Junior, infant brother Virgil and Richard; and three sisters, Lillian Bentrup, Lucille Turnblazer and Alvera Christy.

MEIER — Funeral services for Harry James Meier, who died Saturday, May 20, 2017, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock with the Rev. James Lewis of Butler presiding.
