Doris C. Price

Doris C. Price

Doris C. Price, 90, a well-known Chicora resident, went to be with the Lord Saturday evening at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born near New Kensington on May 11, 1927, Doris was the second daughter of the late Warren W. and Dorothy Dawe Campbell.

Doris was a life member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chicora and in her earlier years had been a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Chicora. She was an excellent student and was proud of the fact that she never missed a day of school in 12 years.

While in high school, Doris participated in girls basketball and cheerleading, and was also head majorette and student secretary. She attended and graduated from Chicora High School in 1945. She also attended Butler Business College following graduation.

Doris began her employment at the age of 8 as a milk bottle washer for the Mourer Dairy Farm, who was fortunately a close neighbor. She landed her first regular job at the age of 12 with Gaisford Pharmacy. Doris worked at the soda fountain for several years and her family often now hear stories of gratitude for her providing the town children with a soda when they asked for water because they did not have 5 cents to buy a soda. She later advanced to helping to fill prescriptions and would often provide delivery service by foot to the elderly residents of Chicora. She remained at Gaisford Pharmacy, which later became Chicora Drug, for more than half a century.

Doris married John T. Price at Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church in Chicora on Sept. 18, 1948, after dating for several years. They were married until his death in 1974. Doris and her husband, John, provided a loving home for her great aunt Florence M. Dawe Andre from 1956 to 1968, which proved to be a wonderful experience for all.

All three of Doris’ brothers and her husband, John, served in the military. Doris was very proud of this and was very patriotic. She could always be seen at the Chicora Memorial Day parade in her red, white and blue.

Doris loved to work crossword puzzles and many felt she was a master at these. In the past, she enjoyed playing bingo, bowling, shopping, attending her grandchildren’s sporting and equine events, traveling to casinos and spending holidays with her family at Ellen Kay and Kirby’s cabin along the Allegheny River.

She was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department for many years. She repeatedly told her children what wonderful groups of friends they had and enjoyed their friendship.

Doris was most proud of the fact that all five of her grandchildren entered the medical profession and never missed telling this fact to her own medical treatment team.

Surviving are two daughters, Ellen Kay Campbell and her husband, Kirby, of Butler and Elaine K. Kusick and her husband, Bill, of Chicora; five grandchildren, Kelly K. Campbell of Gibsonia, Dr. Kristen Campbell Funovits and her husband, Michael, of Gibsonia, Kimberly K. Sundie and her husband, Dan, of Butler, Dr. Karissa Kusick Dominick and her husband, Rian, of Avon, Ohio, and Dr. Joseph Kusick and his wife, Liliana, of Collingswood, N.J.; 11 great-grandchildren, Koen, Kade, Karson and Kaylee Sundie, Kole, Klay and Kyle Funovits, Grady, Kenley and Madelyn Dominick, and Mia Kusick; two brothers, Norman D. Campbell and his wife, Barbara, of Surprise, Ariz. and Richard K. Campbell and his wife, Mayre, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Sharon Fritch, and her husband, Wilbert “Will”, of Chicora; a sister-in-law, Barbara J. Campbell of Butler; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by her brother, Larry D. Campbell, as well as a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Pietro Silverio.
