LOS ANGELES — The holder of the sole winning Powerball ticket worth $447.8 million can claim the prize as early as today, lottery officials said.

The ticket matching all six numbers was sold in Southern California, and whoever owns it will claim the 10th largest lottery prize in U.S. history. Lottery officials said the winner has one year to claim the prize.

The winning ticket was sold at Marietta Liquor & Deli in Menifee. The store just off a highway caters to retirees who live in the part of Menifee known as Sun City. It also is a common stop for motorists passing through the area about 80 miles from Los Angeles.

ATLANTA — Former President Jimmy Carter took time to shake the hand of every passenger aboard a recent commercial flight from Atlanta to Washington.

James Parker Sheffield was aboard the flight last week and tweeted video of the smiling 92-year-old walking down the aisle and shaking hands with everyone aboard. Sheffield said Carter’s enthusiasm was “authentic and humble.”

Carter spokesman Deanna Congileo tells the AP that Carter has shaken hands with travelers on planes for decades since leaving office and “enjoys it.”

Carter was flying to Washington ahead of Friday’s funeral for his former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Some runners didn’t expect to see a bear on their Colorado race route.

Donald Sanborn says he was about 5 miles into the Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Run on Sunday when the bear ambled across a road.

Sanborn says the animal seemed to be trying to decide whether to zip across the road filled with runners when a large enough gap finally emerged for the bear to get through.

The competition winds through Garden of the Gods Park between Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs.

CROOKSVILLE, Ohio — A small Ohio village has demolished a popular pizzeria after a sinkhole opened up beneath it.

Sprankle’s Village Pizza in Crooksville had to close and be demolished after a 20-foot-deep sinkhole appeared Friday, causing the first floor to partially collapse.

While crews prepared to demolish the building, employees and community members salvaged as much food and equipment as they could.
