Butler splits games

BlueSox lose 19-8 Sunday after 16-14 win on Saturday

The Butler BlueSox split their two games over the weekend, winning 16-14 at Danville (Ill.) on Saturday before dropping a 19-8 Sunday decision at Lafayette (Ind.).

In the first game, the Sox scored seven runs in the second inning, but found themselves in a 13-13 stalemate after Danville plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Butler’s Tanner Murphy then clubbed a one-out, bases-clearing double in the top of the ninth inning that proved to be the winning hit.

Tyler Benson went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and one RBI. Murphy had two hits, including a triple, scored a run and drove in five. Calvin Scott smacked his first home run of the season for Butler.

Despite allowing three runs in three innings of relief, Pavin Parks earned the pitching win.

James Meeker allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth, but closed the game to earn the save.

The BlueSox overcame six errors in the victory.

In Sunday’s loss, the Sox were down early as Lafayette scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning against Butler starter Mike Klingensmith.

Butler battled back to take an 8-7 lead after 4½ innings, only to have the Aviators score the game’s final 12 runs.

Kristian Webb singled and doubled, adding two runs scored and one RBI for the Sox (6-6). Parks singled and doubled, scored once and drove in one.

Klingensmith took the loss, allowing nine runs on nine hits in five-plus innings of work.

The teams combined for seven errors, four of them charged to Butler.
