Teen rescued from McConnells Mill gorge
SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — Emergency personnel Wednesday rescued a teen who fell off a cliff at McConnells Mill State Park.
An 18 year-old from Green Tree, Allegheny County around 3 p.m. slipped and fell about 25 feet after getting too close to the top of the gorge near Kildoo Falls, park manager Dustin Drew said.
He was visiting the park with several friends, who saw him fall and ran to call 911 on the park's emergency phone near the mill, Drew said.
Portersville Muddy Creek EMS and Slippery Rock Township Volunteer Fire Department were able to extract him using ropes and a Stokes basket.
He was flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with a head injury and possible broken ribs, though he was conscious and alert when rescued.
Hikers are advised to stay on the trails when visiting the park, as many people have fallen and gotten injured there over the years, Drew said.
