BlueSox hike win streak to 4
The Butler BlueSox are red hot.
Behind stellar pitching performances from starters Josh LaPiana and Mike Klingensmith over the weekend in a 6-2 win Saturday night and a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon over West Virginia, Butler has now won four straight.
LaPiana, a left-hander from Chartiers Valley High School and a junior at the University of Utah, struck out nine and walked just one in seven innings Saturday.
The only run LaPiana gave up was a solo home run to Matt DiLeo in the top of the third inning.
By then, LaPiana already had a 4-0 lead thanks to a big first inning by the BlueSox.
Rey Gonzalez drove home two runs and doubled and Patrick Ferguson hit a two-run homer, his third of the season already, to lead the BlueSox offense in the victory Saturday.
Klingensmith picked up on a soggy Sunday where LaPiana had left off Saturday, tossing seven strong innings.
The right-hander from Punxsutawney struck out five and scattered seven hits in his outing.
Again, Butler (4-2) jumped out early on West Virginia (1-5), scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI by Kristian Webb.
The BlueSox scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
All three runs were unearned.
Butler native Cory Wheeler had a pair of hits Sunday.
Gonzalez pitched the final two innings for his first save of the season.
Butler is off today and will host Champion City Tuesday and Wednesday.
Both game are scheduled to start at 6:35 p.m.
