Butler police are investigating the death of a 54-year-old man found Wednesday night at his apartment in the 400 block of West Penn Street.

No foul play or drugs are suspected in Scott Armstrong's death, authorities said.

Officers found Armstrong's body about 8:20 p.m. in the bedroom of his upstairs apartment, said police Deputy Chief David Adam.

“A family member from Texas called to ask that we check on his welfare,” Adam said. “They hadn't heard from him in a while.”

The home's landlord met police there and let officers inside. Nothing looked out of place and police found nothing suspicious.

Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr pronounced Armstrong dead. He said it appeared the man had been dead for possibly up to two days.

An autopsy was performed Thursday but a cause of death is still pending results of toxicology tests, which won't be available for several weeks, authorities said.

Barr said he spoke to Armstrong's mother and sister in Texas. They told investigators that they did not believe Armstrong was suffering any prior medical condition.

Authorities, however, admitted that he had previously battled a history of inhaling air duster. His criminal record showed two prior huffing convictions in 2010 and 2014.

Police found Armstrong's cell phone with the body. His last text message sent was May 18 but it was not immediately known when anyone last saw or communicated with him.
