New dean hired for SRU's College of Liberal Arts
SLIPPERY ROCK — A department chairman and professor in the writing and linguistics department at Georgia Southern University has been hired as Slippery Rock University’s dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
Dan Bauer will join SRU on July 3, when he moves from his current position leading nearly 60 full time faculty members in Statesboro, Ga.
Before his tenure at Georgia Southern, which began in 2013, Bauer served 17 years as a faculty member at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga., Simpson College in Iowa, and Keuka College in New York.
As dean, Bauer will lead an SRU college comprised of 11 departments. He replaces interim dean Jennifer Keller, who has served in the position since June 10, 2016. Keller, a professor of dance, will resume her role as an instructor and assistant to the dean.
SRU officials said Bauer was selected for the position after he impressed with his experience, communication skills and ideas.
“He clearly enjoys working with people and is passionate about the liberal arts,” said Keith Dills, dean of SRU’s College of Education and chairman of the search committee that hired Bauer.
Bauer’s research focuses on writing assessment and literacy, the legacy of composition and epistemology, and the legacy of public educational institutions with regard to racial equality, opportunity and curriculum.
He earned his doctorate in rhetoric and professional communication from New Mexico State University, his master’s in English from Southern Illinois University, and his bachelor’s in English from Simpson College.
