In preparation for Memorial Day on Monday, Butler High School ninth grader and JROTC member Travis Brown puts flags on veterans' grave sites Wednesday at Butler County Memorial Park cemetery in Butler Township.

Here is a list of some of the scheduled events celebrating Memorial Day in Butler County this weekend.

ButlerThe city's Memorial Day parade will begin at 10:40 a.m. Monday at Diamond Park and will march north on Main Street.The road will close at 10:15 a.m. and will remain closed until the parade route is clear.Following the parade, an event at North Cemetery will include a performance by the Butler Notables and speakers, including Butler County Veteran of the Year Ronald Huff of Chicora, who served in Vietnam from 1964 to 1967.Wreathes will be placed by American Legion Riders at memorial sites in and around the city.

Butler TownshipButler County Veterans Services will host Memorial Day events on Monday starting at 9 a.m. with a program at VA Butler Healthcare.

Cranberry TownshipThe VFW Post 879 will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at the veterans' memorial in North Boundary Park.The ceremony will include a presentation of six wreaths by veterans accompanied by Seneca Valley Senior High School trumpet players.Retired Brig. Gen. Roy Uptegraff III will be the guest speaker. There also will be a release of white doves in remembrance of prisoners of war and those missing in action.

Evans CityThe Evans City Bishop Sharrar American Legion Post 219 will host a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Evans City Cemetery monument. Those who died in battle will be remembered with a flag planted for each war in which Americans fought.Those attending should take their own seating. In case of rain, the ceremony will be at Evans City School.

FreeportThe VFW Post 6648 will hold a Memorial Day parade at 9:30 a.m. Monday, starting at the former junior high school and proceed to Freeport Tower on Riverside Drive.

HarrisvilleAmerican Legion Post 852 will sponsor a parade at 1 p.m. Monday, followed by a service at Community Park. The parade will begin at the fire fall and proceed along Route 58 and Route 8 before ending at the park.

MarsThe American Legion Post 787 and the VFW Post 7505 will conduct a service at 2 p.m. Sunday outside their building at 331 Mars-Valencia Road under a pavilion. The service will last about an hour and will be followed by a luncheon at the building's banquet hall. Members of the Mars High School band will play music, and the Adams Area Fire District will unfurl a large U.S. flag.

SaxonburgThe Memorial Day parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the borough building before proceeding to Roebling Park.

Slippery RockAmerican Legion Post 393 is sponsoring a ceremony at Slippery Rock Cemetery at 10 a.m. Monday, with keynote speaker Larry Vogel Jr. The ceremony also will honor the winners of the annual Outstanding Eighth Grade Boy and Girl contest, and include a performance by the Slippery Rock High School Band. If weather is inclement, ceremonies will move to the Slippery Rock Community Park Recreation Building on North Main Street.

ZelienopleAmerican Legion Post 474 will host activities on Monday.Ceremonies will be held at St. Gregory's Cemetery at 9 a.m., Harmony square at 9:30 a.m. and then Harmony Cemetery.A service honoring veterans will take place at 11 a.m. at the memorial park on Main Street. The service will include a fly over by the Condor Aero Club and music by the Seneca Valley Brass Quintet.
