CRANBERRY TWP — A cleaning lady charged in Adams Township with stealing jewelry from a home she cleaned now is charged by Cranberry Township police with doing the same thing at three houses in Cranberry, taking a combined $22,000 worth of jewelry.

Brittany Smith, 27, of Butler, faces more felony charges after allegedly taking cases of jewelry from homes she cleaned in the township starting in 2014.

Smith was charged in Adams Township earlier this year with stealing a ring from a client's home and pawning it.

She faces three felony charges of theft and three charges of receiving stolen property from three separate cases in Cranberry Township.

On Aug. 20, 2014, Ronald Knorr reported to police that two necklaces, two bracelets and two sets of earrings worth a total of about $10,000 were stolen from his residence sometime on Aug. 15, 2014.

As a result of the investigation, Smith, Knorr's cleaning lady's daughter, was accused of stealing several pieces of jewelry from the home while helping her mother clean.

According to court documents, Smith on Feb. 17 admitted to Cranberry Township police that she stole the jewelry from the Knorr residence and remembered Knorr's wife being hospitalized during the incident.

Gina Ruiz contacted Cranberry Township police on Jan. 18 after seeing a report about the charges against Smith, also her cleaning lady.

According to court documents, Ruiz said she had items missing in the past, but Smith and her mother denied taking them.

When Ruiz checked her jewelry again after the news report, she found a vast majority of it gone, the affidavit states, along with $700 in cash. Ruiz estimated the loss at about $10,000.

Another resident, Marion Piotrowski, contacted police after her daughter, who lives in Adams Township, told Piotrowski that the cleaning lady, Smith, had stolen jewelry from her house, according to documents.

Piotrowski also used Smith to clean her home in the past, although she had not worked for her since May 2016.

After talking to her daughter, Piotrowski said she looked in her jewelry box and found a gold necklace, a pair of sapphire diamond earrings, two pairs of gold earrings and other items missing.

Piotrowski told police she did not immediately realize the items were gone as she doesn't wear the jewelry often.

Police found the items stolen from Piotrowski were allegedly sold by Smith to an Allegheny County jewelry store. The store manager there told police he did not have the items, which had a retail value of about $2,000.

According to the affidavit, Smith also admitted to stealing from Piotrowski and Ruiz during her interview with Cranberry Township police in February, saying it was because of her illegal drug habit.

Smith waived charges from all three cases to county court Friday, where she will be arraigned on June 20. She remains in Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail.
