[naviga:h3]Wolf: Leftover funds were not returned[/naviga:h3]
PHILADELPHIA — Gov. Tom Wolf says the committee that raised public and private money to put on last summer’s Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia should have returned surplus funds to the taxpayers rather than handing out staff bonuses and grants.
The Legislature provided $10 million for the event, and some lawmakers voiced displeasure upon finding out that the host committee gave nearly $1 million in bonuses for staff members as well as grants for Philadelphia schools and nonprofits. The bonuses were disclosed in a Jan. 31 Federal Election Commission filing.
Wolf said Sunday that the commonwealth supports large events that can benefit the region, but leftover funding should be returned to taxpayers.
Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, the host committee’s chairman, called the bonuses a reward for low pay and long hours.
[naviga:h3]Treatment for Lyme disease disputed[/naviga:h3]
LEVITTOWN — Tick-borne infections are on the rise and doctors continue to disagree over treatment.
Cases of Lyme disease in the Commonwealth have almost tripled between 2011 and 2016.
The disease carries a broad range of symptoms that include joint issues, digestive problems and fatigue.
The two leaders in treatment, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society, agree that antibiotics should be used.
However, arguments flare up over exactly how patients are treated.
Doctors disagree about how long patients should be treated. Some doctors even call into question if people are being misdiagnosed because symptoms of the disease are similar to other illnesses.
Advocates in the state hope to unite support groups and spread awareness.
