SLIPPERY ROCK — A Butler County man found passed out in a van told police he thought he was in Cranberry Township before being arrested for drunken driving.

He was off by more than 30 miles.

And the van that Robert N. West, 24, of Cranberry Township was in, Slippery Rock University police said, did not belong to him.

A hearing for West on driving under the influence and theft charges is set for later this month.

Police were called May 6 to the SRU maintenance center after an employee opened the door to the work van, a 2004 Chevrolet Venture, and discovered the defendant slumped over the steering wheel, according to court documents.

The employee tried to awaken West by shaking him. She also told him to get out and asked what he was doing there.

A key was in the ignition but when the employee attempted to take it, West awakened and grabbed hold of it. He refused to get out of the vehicle.

A police officer got there and smelled a “strong odor” of alcohol coming from him. He also appeared confused.

West told the officer he was waiting for his work crew. But when police asked him where he was, he replied, “Cranberry,” and added that he works for a landscaping company there.

Police eventually took the suspect to the station for a breath test, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.141 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

He is charged with driving under the influence. Additionally, police charged him with felony counts of theft and attempted theft for being in the van without permission and for putting the key in the ignition.

A preliminary hearing is set for May 31 at the office of District Judge William O'Donnell in Slippery Rock. West remains free on his own recognizance.
