Residents in Mars, West Liberty and Allegheny Township have extra decisions to make when they vote in Tuesday's primary.

The three communities have ballot questions.

Liquor licenses

Mars residents are being asked, “Do you favor the granting of liquor licenses for the sale of liquor,” and “Do you favor the granting of liquor licenses to public venues for the sale of liquor in Mars?”

Mars Mayor Gregg Hartung said they'd like to see alcohol sold in the borough to help with revitalization efforts downtown. The hope is to attract a restaurant to downtown Mars that would be open in the evening or late-night downtown; now, there are only breakfast and lunch shops.

Some restaurants are interested, but said they needed to be able to sell alcohol to be successful, Hartung said. During public meetings residents said they'd also like to see an evening dinner and drink establishment in Mars.

Looking to the success Slippery Rock had with North Country Brewing after allowing alcohol sales and the success of the Mars Brewfest the past few years, Hartung said it seemed like the right time to bring it to a vote.

“We're excited about it,” Hartung said. “It'll be our first big step in revitalization. We're giving people more reasons to stay in town in the evening.”

Small games of chance

West Liberty and Allegheny Township residents will get to decide if the municipalities can issue licenses to conduct small games of chance.

Small games of chance include raffles, 50/50 drawings, race night games and pull-tab games commonly used by community organizations as fundraisers.

Officials from both municipalities said the county sent them letters advising that they had not yet adopted a small games of chance ordinance, so they petitioned to get the question put on the ballot.
