Butler County Sheriff Mike Slupe is starting a new program next month for residents to dump their unused prescription drugs.

“Our target date is June 1,” he said.

Under Project D.U.M.P. (Disposal of Unused Medications Properly), people who cannot make it to the existing drop off boxes scattered across the county may call Slupe's office to schedule a pickup of their legally prescribed opiates.

Slupe said the program is another facet to the county's war on drugs.

“This is just another layer,” he said.

Slupe said the pickups would be scheduled around his deputies' other duties.

“We already have the infrastructure in place,” he said. “It's just a matter of the coordination part.”

The collected drugs would be sealed and stored in the sheriff's evidence room inside the county courthouse.
